About the Awards
The Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival is the biggest festival of it's kind east of the Mississippi, it attracts over 45,000 people!
Nearly 500 fleeces are entered in the fleece show and over 600 sheep participate in the various breed shows.
Fleeces are judged in groups based on breed and by color (white or natural colored, natural colored being anything other than all white). In both the color and white division, the fleeces
are classed by fineness, which refers to fiber diameter. The classes for white and colored fleeces are the same: fine, medium, long, and double-coated.
The top 5 fleeces are picked from each class, for example: white fine, white medium, colored long, colored double-coated, Rambouillet, Cotswold, etc. Then the Champion fleece for each division
(white, color, breed) are picked from the 1st place fleeces.
So, you can see our fleeces took a first in the white long wool class, a 1st in the colored fine wool class, etc, and our 1st place colored long wool went on to be the Grand Champion
Colored Fleece of the show!
Woo-hoo! |
