2014 Wool Fleece

This year fleeces are being sold pretty much UNSKIRTED.  I'll pull off anything really dreadful, but otherwise the fleece will reach you intact and needing to be skirted, especially if you are going to turn around and send it to a mill.  We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Most non-Cotswold sheep are jacketed during hay feeding season to provide the discriminating handspinner with beautiful fiber free of vegetation. Uncoated fleeces will be specified as such.  Even uncoated fleeces will contain very little VM.  Fleeces may be purchased whole or divided in half. Half fleeces are always divided from head to tail. The bred ewe flock is shorn in early March.  Unbred animals are shorn later during April as the weather and time alllows.  Following shearing, fleeces will be available on a first-come, first-served basis unless reserved. A charge of $20 per fleece will positively hold a particular fleece for you. This fee will be applied to the final purchase price of the fleece. Final price is determined by fleece weight. Expected fleece weights are listed with each fleece. If a flaw is discovered in a reserved fleece, I will email you as soon as it's discovered.

Free samples - small lock of the fleece - may be requested to confirm color.

Note: If you are outside of the USA, please check with your country's regulations regarding importing RAW fleece prior to purchasing from us. And, additional shipping charges will likely apply.

OK, the picture is not that flattering. I sent her fleece to the new owner without taking a picture and only had fiber from the uncoated neck to take pics of. Duh. Still, you can see the nice firm crimp, good length and some luster. This is a springy, dense fleece with nice lock structure. And what a great example of uncoated wool being dirtier than coated ones, like Gooseberry above. Coated.  $15.00 per lb. Full fleece approx. 8-9 lb.

Snowflake's 2014 fleece is reserved for Elizabeth B.

Angel

CVM/Ramb./Finn

Angelique's last lamb, she takes her mother's place in the flock. This fleece is definately on the fine side of medium. Almost a fine, but not quite. Super soft and crimpy. Good luster for the fineness. Coated. $15.00 per lb. Full fleece approx. 7-8 lb.

Angel's 2014 fleece is reserved for Debra K.

Tahiti

Daughter of Pearl, this fleece has the luster and crimp of a long wool, but is softer and somewhat shorter like a medium grade, but I kept it in the Long Wool category. The crimp is quite pronounced and the wool has a nice, drape-y handle. Full fleece approx. 9-10 lb. Coated.  $15.00 per lb.  (Apologies for the sample pic - I sold the fleece before I thought to get a good photo so this is uncoated neck wool. )

Tahiti's 2014 fleece is reserved for Natalie M.

Bacardi

CVM/Rambouillet/ Border Leicester

6.0"

This medium fleece is on the heavier end of the grade and almost makes it to a "long", but I'm calling it closer to medium. Although she started out dark moorit, Bacardi faded in her first year to this pretty oatmeal shade. Plenty light enough to dye if you wish, but lovely as it is. The tips are not dirty in this picture - it's the darker color she was born with, grown out. Future shearings will be the shade nearer the butt of the locks. Pronounced crimp and good luster. Nice! Coated.  $15.00 per lb, full fleece weighs 9-10 lb.

Bacardi's 2014 fleece is reserved for Jennifer W.

Copper fleece sample

4.5"

This fleece is on the finer end of medium, but still falls into that grade. Very soft hand, great crimp, good length for the fineness. Copper was born dark moorit, but is fading in an uneven, mottled manner to shades of tan and sand so I've pulled locks out to show the variation of shading. In future years, she may fade to the lighter color all over. Time will tell. Coated. $15.00 per lb, full fleece weighs 7-8 lb.

Sprinkles

Cotswold/Romney/CVM/Rambou.

6.00"

Sprinkles has a break near the tip of the lock this year.  The tips come off fairly easily so this will either be a fleece to avoid if you don't want to hand process, OR a nice buy if your idea of a pleasant evening is handling a soft clean fleece lock by lock to tug the tips off.  Even with half an inch coming off the fleece has good length, pronounced crimp, luster and hand.  Sprinkles has lightened with age and now has varying shades of gray, some light enough to overdye. Was Champion Natural Color Fleece and Reserve Grand Champion Fleece at the 2009 NY state fair.  Uncoated.  $7.00 per lb. Full fleece approx. 7-8 lbs.  To be shorn in late April.

White Cotswold Wool

There is not a great deal of variation in the fleeces of the white Cotswolds, so we do not list them individually as we did with the other sheep above. We sell raw, skirted Cotswold fleece by the pound or by the whole fleece (UNskirted). Curl character does vary, so let us know your plans for the wool and we can pick a fleece that will perform the best for your project.   $15.00 per lb if buying by the pound or $13.00 per lb. if buying whole fleeces. If you are interested in whole fleeces, please email us as weights will vary but generally run 9-12 lbs..

There is some difference between a Cots lamb fleece, and fleece from older animals. In general, we find it to be finer and silkier.  We sell raw, skirted lamb fleece by the pound, usually starting in September, when all the Cotswold lambs are shorn for the first time.  Fleece is generally 5 inches long at that time.   If you are interested, please contact us for info on availability.  $18.00 per lb.  Whole, UNskirted lamb fleece is $15/lb and weights range from 3-5 lbs. generally.

Colored Cotswold Wool

Our Colored Cotswolds vary quite a bit in color. Most individuals bear a range of grays shading to black. Some are predominantly pale to medium silver with just a little black on the neck and legs, others are the reverse. All have high luster and good curl. We sell raw, skirted Cotswold fleece by the pound or if you want to order whole fleeces, please contact us for availability.  $15.00 per lb. when sold by the pound, $13 per lb by the whole UNskirted fleece.  Colored Cotswold fleeces generally run 8-11 lbs.

**First Shearing

The first fleece shorn from a sheep is often considered the softest the animal will ever produce, and is very desirable for handspinning. Many natural colored sheep at Nistock Farms will fade to gray, often by their second shearing, so these fleeces are often the darkest available, too. Lamb fleeces from Nistock Farms have been coated, and are well skirted, just like the adult's.

* RESERVED SHOW FLEECE

Nistock Farms attends several sheep and wool festivals yearly and regularly exhibits several fleeces. If you are interested in a fleece we plan to exhibit, please ask if you can reserve it for purchase after the show. Some shows require fleeces to be sold at that venue and may not be available for reservation this year.
